Dr. Stephen S. Feman is the Davisson Professor of Ophthalmology at the Saint Louis University School of Medicine. His specialty is retinal diseases and surgery, with a focus on diabetic eye disease and macular degeneration. He is the author of more than 160 scientific medical publications, and is the recipient of the American Diabetes Association’s Charles H. Best Medal for clinical research. After 20 years on the faculty at Vanderbilt University, Dr. Feman was recruited to Missouri to direct the Eye Institute at Saint Louis University. He served as president of the Tennessee Ophthalmological Society in the past, and of the Saint Louis Ophthalmology Society more recently. Since stepping down from being institute director, he has been studying economics and health care policy at the SLU School of Public Health. As a physician and surgeon, he has seen medicine evolve. Today, people know more about medical problems and take an active role in their personal health care. Similarly, the nationwide changes that are developing in health care must represent the suggestions of an informed, educated public.
